Ibrahim Zikri effendi Užičanin and his pendname Manẓūme-i Cevāhir

This paper explores the life and work of the distinguished Bosniak poet, commentator on classical works, and Halveti dervish, Ibrahim Zikri Effendi Užičanin, son of Haji Ahmed Aga. In an effort to consolidate all available information about the author’s life and oeuvre, special attention is devoted to his pendname titled Manẓūme-i Cevāhir (The Jewel Poem). Following the introductory discussion, the paper presents the still scarce data concerning Zikri’s life, as well as several new discoveries related to his works written in Ottoman Turkish and Arabic. A separate section is dedicated to the analysis of the only surviving manuscript of Zikri’s pendname, which is recorded in a collection preserved in the manuscript holdings of Gazi Husrev Beg’s Library in Sarajevo. Following the analysis, a transcription and an integral translation of this moral-didactic poem are provided.
