Effect of algae adhesion on the corrosion and hydrogen entry of AISI 4135 high-strength steel in the marine environment
The corrosion and hydrogen permeation behavior of a high strength steel with algae adhesion under natural corrosion state were studied by field exposure tests. Owing to the shielding effect, the R ct value of steel with algae adhesion was increased, and the average corrosion rate of steel was decreased but promote localized corrosion. Under natural corrosion state, algae adhesion can reduce the hydrogen permeation current, but could potentially increase the hydrogen concentration locally. A mechanism was proposed to explain the observed phenomenon, and its effect on service safety was analyzed.
