Cautionary Tale of Failed Mitral Valve Replacements in a Young Female with Rheumatic Heart Disease
Abstract A female patient in her early 50s with rheumatic heart disease (RHD) presented with symptoms of cardiac failure 13 years following a bioprosthetic mitral valve replacement (MVR). Echocardiography revealed degenerated MVR, resulting in severe mitral regurgitation (MR), severe tricuspid regurgitation, and pulmonary hypertension, warranting complex redo MVR with atrioventricular groove reconstruction and tricuspid valve annuloplasty. The perioperative period was complicated by multi-organ failure due to early dehisce of the mechanical MVR leading to the tragic death of this patient.
