A couple of words about the shingles vaccine: A novelty in the Polish doctor’s office
Herpes zoster is caused by the reactivation of a primary infection of the varicella-zoster virus. It is particularly common among older individuals, with estimates suggesting that one in three people will develop shingles during their lifetime. This disease can lead to numerous complications, the most frequent of which is postherpetic neuralgia, significantly impacting patients’ quality of life. Currently, two shingles vaccines are registered in the European Union. In 2023, the herpes zoster vaccine Shingrix became available in pharmacies across Poland. Polish physicians should promote this immunization among patients, especially those in high-risk groups. This literature review aims to summarize information from existing literature regarding shingles vaccination, focusing on its effectiveness and role in medicine.
