Dynamic Analysis of Network on Chip Topologies and Designing a Novel Mesh of Spidergon Topology

Network-on-Chip (NoC) is a promising substitute for traditional buses that were evolved to replace communication bottlenecks. NoC is a communication medium used between System-on-Chip (SoC) devices. With conventional buses, it is extremely difficult to address issues such as scalability, latency, low-power consumption, and reliability, among others, as demand grows. For this purpose, various topologies including Mesh, Ring, Spidergon, Star, Torus, King Mesh (KM), Mesh Connected Ring (MCR), and multi-star that emerged in NoC were evaluated at different bandwidths (50–200)[Formula: see text]Mbps for throughput and latency. In this paper, authors proposed a novel topology, Mesh of Spidergon (MoS), which combines the advantages of MoS to deliver superior performance in terms of throughput, latency, and fault tolerance. A novel topology MoS topology was implemented and evaluated using the NS-2 tool with different metrics. Stream Control Transmission Protocol (SCTP) and Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) are used in File Transmission Protocol (FTP) as a traffic source, with fixed data packets of 512 bytes. All nine topologies are designed. Throughput and latency were compared between them. From that, only Star and MoS topologies received the superior results. So again, throughput was compared between the Star and MoS topologies with single link failure, double link failures, and percentage of Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR) at 50[Formula: see text]Mbps bandwidth were compared. MoS topology obtained superior results with a throughput of 1360.117[Formula: see text]Mbps using SCTP and 3155.797[Formula: see text]Mbps using TCP at single link failure. MoS topology obtained superior results with a throughput of 2489.926[Formula: see text]Mbps using SCTP and 435.837[Formula: see text]Mbps using TCP at double link failure. MoS topology was obtained with superior results than Star topology with 99.74% using SCTP and 99.62% using TCP. The MoS topology outmanoeuvres the Star topology. SCTP protocol outranks TCP protocol using MoS topology providing better performance. Area and power were optimized for various topologies. MoS demonstrates superior resilience under link failure conditions, delivering enhanced throughput, power efficiency, and reliability over conventional topologies, Overall, the MoS topology significantly enhances NoC performance by combining the strengths of MoS, presenting a promising solution for future large-scale SoC designs.
