Utilization and Application of Biopolymer in Biomedical Science Field

Currently, research on various medicines and artificial organs is being actively conducted to treat incurable diseases such as cancer, diabetes, vascular diseases, and arthritis. In the case of synthetic medicines, there is problems such as reduced solubility in water and difficulty in maintaining an appropriate drug concentration in the blood vessels, which reduces the therapeutic effect due to various side effects. To solve these problems, research is being actively conducted on the development of medicines based on controlled realse drug delivery systems that can induce sustainable and triggered release of drugs using natural polymer chitosan and synthetic polymer poly(lactide-co-glycolide), and gene delivery system-based technologies that can efficiently deliver genes to the treatment site and maximize the therapeutic effect. In addition, research is actively being conducted on the development of hydrogel scaffold supports that can safely deliver tissue regeneration cells to the treatment site and facilitate sol-gel transfer in a specific environment. In this study, we aim to share biopolymer materials that can safely deliver drugs, genes, and tissue regeneration cells to the treatment site and maximize the therapeutic effect, and introduce their application technologies.
