Design of an Electromagnet Reaction Wheel With Halbach Array
This study presents a novel bearing-less electromagnetic reaction wheel (ERW) design with a Halbach array coil configuration and ferrite cores to overcome weak magnetic fields and start-up failures in current ERWs. This configuration enhances magnetic field strength and system stability using two magnetic control strategies, namely, controlling coil turns (CCTs) and controlling current magnitude (CCM), respectively, to optimize flux density at critical points. Finite element simulations demonstrate a 328.6% increase in magnetic field strength and a 1736.7% increase in magnetic force over traditional coil sets, confirming feasibility the Halbach array coil configuration for ERW in 1U CubeSats, markedly improves the reliability and performance of the ERW, establishing it as a promising solution for satellite attitude control.
