Battery Charger with Bridgeless Power Factor Correction using PID-ANN Controller
This paper presents a control scheme for a proportional–integral–derivative (PID) controller combined with an artificial neural network (ANN) for a battery charger bridgeless power factor correction (BPFC) Cuk converter. The BPFC Cuk converter eliminates the diode bridge, functioning as a multifunction converter capable of stepping up and stepping down output voltage. To maintain a constant output voltage, an effective control system must be implemented. The PID controller is a widely used technique due to its simplicity; however, it performs poorly in nonlinear applications. This paper proposes a combination of PID and ANN controllers for the BPFC Cuk converter to address the limitations of conventional PID control, particularly during transient operation. The proposed PID-ANN controller's effectiveness is analyzed with three different output voltages: -42 V, -48 V, and -54 V. The characteristics of the battery charger BPFC output during start-up, including overshoot voltage, undershoot voltage, and settling time, are examined. Results are verified using MATLAB-Simulink simulation, demonstrating that the proposed PID-ANN controller effectively controls the output voltage and achieves improved performance during the Cuk converter's start-up.
