Integration of MTC and Satellites for IoT toward 6G Era

5G has seen the integration of satellites with terrestrial mobile networks aiming to alleviate the global coverage problem. 6G will leverage the non-terrestrial segment to interconnect billions of wireless Internet of Things (IoT) devices from the very beginning of its operation. However, the complexity of the satellite technology and the scale of the IoT deployments make it hard to achieve direct machine-type communication (MTC) between IoT devices and satellites for 6G. This book presents a systematic review of non-terrestrial networking (NTN) and its enabling technologies, a comprehensive assessment of the challenges, and takes a deep dive into the future applications of integrated MCT-NTN. The book is structured into fifteen chapters, each focusing on crucial aspects of the technology, from theoretical foundations to practical implementations.
