Wideband Dual-Circularly Polarized Patch-Embedded Dielectric Resonator Antenna Based on Multimode Combination

A compact wideband dual-circularly polarized (DCP) patch-embedded dielectric resonator antenna (PEDRA) is designed using the HEM11δ and TE01δ modes, which are the fundamental modes of the hybrid electromagnetic (HEM) and TE modes, respectively. The antenna consists of a stripline-slot, DR and patches. The stripline-slot functions as both a CP radiator and wideband feeding structure, providing microstrip loop mode and cross-slot mode. Owing to the embedded structure, the four modes can operate simultaneously at adjacent frequencies to obtain a wider bandwidth. The antenna has two ports, and when one of the ports is excited, the antenna can radiate left-handed circularly polarized or right-handed circularly polarized waves. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed design method, the antenna was fabricated and measured. The measured data is in good agreement with the simulation results, proving that the antenna with a compact size of 0.56λ0 × 0.56λ0 × 0.063λ0 (<inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$\lambda _{0}$</tex-math></inline-formula> is the free-space wavelength at the center frequency of 7.0 GHz) has an impedance bandwidth of 4.0 GHz to 10.0 GHz and a 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth of 58.2% [(5.0 to 9.1) GHz].
