Fatal invasive Apophysomyces variabilis infection in a frequent traveller to Mecca, Saudi Arabia
Apophysomyces is a rare mould fungus that causes invasive, often fatal rhino-orbital infection typically in immunocompetent individuals. Several cases have been reported mainly from China, India and Saudi Arabia. Herein, to the best of our knowledge, we describe the first case of imported invasive Apophysomyces variabilis rhino-orbital infection in an Israeli healthy man after travelling to Mecca, Saudi Arabia.
