The Echoes of Trauma and Violence in Murakami’sThe Wind-Up Bird Chronicle

This paper critically focuses on Haruki Murakami’s notion of trauma as central to his fictional narratives. Here, interpretation has been made on his much-discussed novel The Wind-up Bird Chronicle which delineates the exploration of the story of war and history. The analysis begins by tracing the connection between the traumatic events of the past and their implications in the present and future expressing the shift in the potential painful events. Then it examines the modalities of violence in reviving the memories of the major characters to form a different perspective and redefine things around the characters along with the being of their existence. In addition, it critically discusses the trauma of WWII in Japan and its aftereffects on the consciousness of the characters. Finally, it reflects on how the novelist depicts the characters touched by the subtle elements of trauma. Murakami depicts two kinds of trauma in this novel. They are war trauma and childhood trauma. It helps to preserve and recreate intense emotions from the past and understand the deepest inner workings of the characters. He portrays an astounding depiction with elusive phrasing, moving metaphors and distinctive stories that can define what it is like to be in trauma.
