Construction of an educational metaverse shared learning platform

The metaverse is a concept that is gaining traction and it has potential to enhance scientific research. A team of researchers in Taiwan is interested in the application of the metaverse in education; namely, whether the use of technologies within the metaverse can help create a more equitable education. This would benefit students and scientists alike. The team of researchers is led by Associate Professor Cheng-Hung Wang, Digital Content Design Research Centre, National University of Kaohsiung. Wang is currently harnessing his passion for the content design of VR from an educational perspective and making educational resources more equitable to develop an educational metaverse platform called EWova. A shortage of teacher resources is widening the digital gap between urban and rural schools. Wang wants to facilitate cross-school learning without physical movement through the use of an educational metaverse. This would allow teachers in urban schools to simultaneously teach students in rural schools through virtual avatars. By making better use of metaverse and IoT technologies, educational quality and efficiency can be enhanced and more equitable education established, with every student having the opportunity to obtain high-quality educational resources. The use of the metaverse is also expected to improve the immersion and realism of VR as being able to see a teacher’s avatar in action enhances the realism of the interaction.
