This article introduces and criticizes the contents of The Birth of Modern Intelligence in East Asia (hereinafter shortened to Modern Intelligence). Modern Intelligence attempted to explain how modern intelligence was formed in both Korea and China in the early 20th century. To achieve this goal, Modern Intelligence tracked the thoughts and activities of Korean students studying in China and Chinese students studying in America. First, how did Chinese students in America accept Western knowledge and studies during the Nanjing National Government? Second, how did Korean students in China accept modern knowledge and studies in Japanese colonial era? Third, how did intellectuals in both countries transform the modern knowledge and studies they accepted while studying abroad after returning home?
To answer the above questions, Modern Intelligence faithfully analyzed research materials such as official documents, statistical data, newspapers, magazines, study abroad experiences, opinion polls, and interviews. As a result, this book elucidated the foundation and basis for the formation of modern intelligence in both countries, and achieved the success of reconstructing the modern history of both countries as a history of the acceptance of modern knowledge and studies.
Despite these achievements, this book has several problems. First, this book has the problem of failing to more closely link the history of the acceptance and development of modern knowledge and studies in the two countries. Second, this book has the problem of failing to reveal the multifaceted and complex impact of the study abroad experiences of students from both countries on each society. Third, this book has the problem of failing to more faithfully reveal the transformation of modern knowledge and studies in both countries.
