The judgment of the righteous army in Gangwon-do from 1906 to 1910 and the intervention of the Japanese.
The Japanese government harshly punished the righteous army. However, it had the intention of devaluing the righteous army by applying robbery to the righteous army. The Gangwon region played an important role in the righteous army uprising. In addition, righteous army was continuously active while making full use of the mountainous terrain. Therefore, it is an appropriate area to investigate the pattern of the judgment of the righteous army. Article 195 of the 「Criminal Code(刑法大全)」 was the most common punishment for voluntary participants in Gangwon-do, followed by Article 593 robbery, Article 677 riot, and Article 473 murder. The righteous army was sentenced to death and life imprisonment, which were the maximum sentences. Japanese imperialism treated the righteous army as a general crime, not a rebellion, but imposed a sentence that exceeded the rebellion by mainly applying the robbery crime with the strongest sentence. The Japanese tried to deal with the resistance by actively intervening in the judgment of the righteous army. In this process, the issue of torture arises. In general, it is assumed that Japanese imperialism suppressed the righteous army through torture. However, depending on the case, care was taken to prevent torture from occurring in the trials of major righteous army chiefs. This is because torture can be an international problem if it is inflicted on righteous army. At the same time, in practice, torture was conducted in the process of investigating righteous army. Therefore, the measures taken by Japanese imperialism to prevent torture from occurring to righteous army were deceptive.
