Clinical images for Stargardt disease
Stargardt disease (STGD1), is the form of inherited juvenile macular degeneration, is a retinal dystrophy primarily affecting the macula and leading to progressive central vision loss. It is inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern and is caused by mutations in the ABCA4 gene, which plays a key role in the transport of retinoids in the photoreceptor cells. While Stargardt disease typically presents in childhood or adolescence, it may also manifest later in life, and the age of onset and rate of progression can vary widely between individuals.
