Computed Tomography Guided Surgical Management Of Impacted Supernumerary Teeth In A 12 Year Old Child

Surgical extraction of a supernumerary tooth, particularly in the maxillary or mandibular regions, requires careful planning and execution due to its complexity. Supernumerary teeth, or hyperdontia, are extra teeth that develop in addition to the normal number of teeth, often resulting in complications such as impaction, crowding, or interference with normal eruption. This case report highlights the importance of computerized tomography (CT) in evaluating the root relationships of supernumerary teeth located palatally to maxillary permanent central incisors. While traditional radiographs such as periapical, occlusal, and panoramic views help assess the location and type of supernumerary teeth, they lack detailed 3-dimensional information. CT imaging provides accurate visualization of the relationship between supernumerary teeth and adjacent tooth roots. Supernumerary teeth may resemble adjacent teeth or have a different size or shape, leading to complications like impaction, delayed or ectopic eruption, crowding, midline diastema, and cyst formation. Early intervention is often needed to remove these teeth for proper alignment and occlusion. The article discusses the clinical management of an impacted supernumerary tooth obstructing the eruption of a maxillary central incisor and an erupted supernumerary tooth causing a midline diastema.
