Elita feminină românească din Sighișoara (1850−1914)

For the second half of the 19th century and the first years of the 20th century we observe an active involvement of women in the life of Sighisoara society. The wives of members of the local elite were actively involved in the life of the community and in supporting it culturally, socially, and philanthropically. The ladies of Sighisoara’s elite, like their sisters in other towns, support their husbands in their national activism, participating in all the actions they carry out. Even if the activity of the ladies of the Romanian intellectuals in Sighisoara did not reach the level of their fellow citizens of the Saxon community of Sighisoara, we can observe their high level of education. Among them, the first teacher of the Orthodox Confessional School of Sighisoara, Cornelia Ciceiu at the beginning of the 20th century, stands out. The activity of the Romanian elite in the town on the Târnava Mare was part of a general context throughout Transylvania, where from the second half of the 19th century the involvement of women in public life became increasingly active and present in the communities to which they belonged.
