Evaluation of Platelet Indices in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Atbara City, Sudan
Background: DM patients are at a high risk of developing micro- and macrovascular disease. Mean platelet volume (MPV) and platelet distribution width (PDW) are indicators of PLT function and activity, and they have been reported to be influenced significantly by diabetes. This analytical cross-sectional study aimed to assess the PLt indices in type 2 DM in 50 Sudanese diabetic patients and 50 healthy control groups, males and females (30-75) years old, in Atbara River Nile State. The study period was from March to July 2018. Methodology: Venous blood (2.5 ml) was collected in an EDTA container under ideal conditions and analyzed by an automated cell counter (SysmexKX2IN) and a thin blood film. Result: The data was analyzed by SPSS software (statistical package for social science), and the result showed that MPV and PDW values were significantly elevated in diabetic patients compared to control subjects (p = 0.002), respectively, and mean platelet volume (3.76) and platelet distribution width (2.38). Conclusion: This study concluded a higher mean platelet volume and platelet distribution width in diabetic patients than in controls.
