Fault Localization in Transmission Lines: Discrete Wavelet Transform vs DS Filter

This study delves into two fault localization techniques in power transmission systems, specifically focusing on the Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and the DifferentiatorSmoother (DS) filter. The investigation encompasses various transmission line configurations, including transposed, non-transposed, and ideally transposed lines, considering both J. Marti and Bergeron line models. For this purpose, simulations were conducted using the Alternative Transients Program and the Matlab program. The effectiveness of each technique is evaluated by comparing the accuracy of fault distance calculations. Results indicate that while the DS filter generally performs better near terminal ends, the DWT may offer advantages for fault localization in certain scenarios, particularly for nontransposed lines. These findings underscore the importance of considering multiple factors when selecting fault localization methods, contributing to advancements in power system reliability and maintenance practices.
