Cost-Effective IoT System for Continuous Coastal Marine Temperature and Salinity Monitoring
This paper presents the design, prototype construction, and initial field testing of an autonomous Internet of Things (IoT) system for marine coastal monitoring. The system utilizes off-the-shelf, economical components for ease of replacement and is centrally processed by a Raspberry Pi. It is powered by a battery charged through a solar panel and is capable of sensing underwater temperature and transmitting data to a server via a cellular network. The initial prototype was successfully installed and operated on a pier along the coast of Montevideo, Uruguay, for several months.
