Difference in Lightning Study Between HTLS and Conventional Conductor
The increased energy consumption in industrial and commercial sub-transmission networks has significantly heightened the loading of transmission lines. Therefore, an increase in transmission capacity is necessary to meet this rise in consumption in these networks. Thus, in recent years, HighTemperature Low-Sag (HTLS) conductors have been increasingly used to replace conventional conductors in the current uprating of transmission networks due to their superior power transmission capabilities compared to conventional options, particularly at elevated temperatures. The purpose of this article is to present the performance of the HTLS conductor (ACCC) in a single-circuit overhead transmission line compared to a conventional conductor (AAAC) for an overvoltage and backflashover study under the same conditions of required power and to consider the most rigorous formulation for computing the line parameters. The results show different behaviors of overvoltages when comparing the HTL conductor and conventional conductor. Additionally, the time at which the backflashover phenomenon occurs is also different.
