BioZs: An Open Smartwatch Platform for Biomedical Applications

The integration of smartwatches with biomedical monitoring capabilities is transforming personalized healthcare. This paper presents the development of a smartwatch designed to track essential biomedical parameters such as heart rate, blood oxygen saturation, ambient temperature, and step count. The project builds upon the Open Source ZSWatch, available on GitHub, which provides hardware design files (PCB), software, and casing. Significant modifications were made to incorporate the MAX30101 optical sensor for heart rate and oxygen saturation, along with the MAX32664 bio-sensor hub, integrated into a redesigned PCB connected to the original architecture. As a result, the smartwatch casing was re-engineered to accommodate the updated hardware. Physiological data are displayed on the smartwatch’s screen and can be transmitted via Bluetooth to a smartphone for viewing through a dedicated mobile app. Additionally, alarms are set to notify users of abnormal physiological readings. The system was successfully validated during testing, demonstrating its potential for further advancements in personalized healthcare. Abstract
