Comparative Study of the Rectifier Topology for Efficient Renewable Power-to-Hydrogen System

The power ripple generated by the rectifier tends to pull down the power-to-hydrogen efficiency of water electrolyzers, which is rarely considered in the current research. In this paper, the impact of power ripple on electrolyzer performance is quantified based on electrochemical principle. Furthermore, different types of rectifiers, including thyristorbased, diode-based and IGBT-based rectifiers are compared in terms of efficiency. These topologies are further tested in the green hydrogen production system to find out the optimal topology to maximize the economical profit of the system.

Abstract

The power ripple generated by the rectifier tends to pull down the power-to-hydrogen efficiency of water electrolyzers, which is rarely considered in the current research. In this paper, the impact of power ripple on electrolyzer performance is quantified based on electrochemical principle. Furthermore, different types of rectifiers, including thyristorbased, diode-based and IGBT-based rectifiers are compared in terms of efficiency. These topologies are further tested in the green hydrogen production system to find out the optimal topology to maximize the economical profit of the system.
