Adaptive and Hierarchical Voltage Control: The Overview of Real Time Methodology for Voltage Regulators

This paper introduces an innovative method for adaptive and hierarchical voltage control (AHVC) in distribution power systems. The proposed method is a hybrid approach that integrates a centralized control module with distributed modules. The centralized module, referred to as the Hierarchical Control (HC), works in conjunction with the supervisory control and data acquisition system (SCADA). The distributed module, known as the Local Control (LC), is connected to each Step Voltage Regulator (VR). This control system operates with individual settings and in real-time, providing a robust solution for application in distribution lines. It enhances voltage control flexibility for various scenarios, including varying or seasonal loads, reconfiguration switching, and contingencies (self-healing). The detailed analysis of each step in the method allows for the evaluation of its benefits and integration with supervision and control tools. Additionally, it facilitates local processing to define equipment settings, leading to a distributed intelligence system that further leverages the potential of smart grids.
