Crystal Verse: Exploring The Nanorealms
The poor solubility is currently the most significant problem in the drug discovery and development. This effects many properties of drug such as bioavailability and stability. This can be easily overcome by converting the active moiety into nanocrystals.Drug nanocrystals are nanoscopic particles of the drug with particle size less than 1000 nm.They often help in improving the safety and efficacy of the drugs, especially with the drugs with poor water solubility.Drug nanocrystals can be produced easily, but the stability is a matter of consideration due to its large surface area to volume ratio which result in the recrystallization of the drug into large particles. To prevent this phenomenon drugs are surrounded by a thin layer of stabilizer layer.Various formulation technique are applied to compensate for the poor solubility of the drug. They can be produced by various methods such as bottom-up method, top-down method, spray drying, top-down and bottom-up method, high energy milling and precipitation.A number of invitro and in vivo tests have been performed to evaluate the safety and stability of the nanocrystals.
