THE NEW FACE OF AGE-RELATED DISEASES (CLINICAL LECTURE)

Objective. To describe current approaches to the issue of sarcopenia in older adults. Sarcopenia is a geriatric syndrome commonly observed in elderly and older adults. It reduces their physical capabilities, worsens quality of life, and increases the frequency of falls, thereby raising the risk of osteoporotic fractures. Muscle mass index and imaging studies such as CT, MRI, and DXA are used to assess age-related muscle mass loss. Prevention and treatment of sarcopenia involve therapeutic exercise, dietary adjustments, and pharmacotherapy. Conclusions. Epidemiological studies are needed to examine the prevalence and risk factors of sarcopenia in older age groups, as well as the development of methods and tools for diagnosing, preventing, and treating functional disorders of the muscular system.
