High-FoM All-Dielectric Metasurface for Advanced Mid-IR Sensing Applications

Mid-IR spectroscopy represents the gold standard technique for the spectral characterization of a wide range of compounds due to their unique absorption spectra in this range. However conventional photonic devices and sensors operating in the mid-IR require several challenging techniques to satisfy a trade-off between size and performance. In that context, we propose the design of a novel all-dielectric high Q-factor metasurface operating in the mid-IR as an alternative method to improve mid-IR spectroscopy compared to Attenuated Total Reflectance (ATR) spectroscopy and Surface Enhanced InfraRed Absorption Spectroscopy (SEIRAS). The high Q-factor and high near field enhancement represent also an approach to obtaining high performance meta-sensors operating in the mid-IR, with the aim of obtaining a fully integrated mid-IR spectroscopic and sensing device.
