An Interferometric Fiber Optic Gyroscope Based on Fiber Delay With Reduced Bias Instability and Enhanced Sensitivity

With the continuous expansion of the application fields of interferometric fiber optic gyroscopes (IFOGs), the industry has increased the requirements for the performance of IFOGs. In the development of FOGs in various directions, the optimization of sensitivity and stability has always been the core focus. In this paper, we propose a novel IFOG configuration based on a fiber delay line, which uses two orthogonal polarization states within the optical fiber and a fiber delay line to effectively suppress relative intensity noise and polarization nonreciprocal noise in IFOGs. The experimental results show that this novel IFOG configuration has improved sensitivity, angular random walk, and bias instability. It can achieve a 7.13-fold reduction in the angle random walk (ARW), a 3.8-fold reduction in bias instability (BI), and a 7.33-fold suppression of self-noise, with a sensitivity of <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$1.5\times 10^{-8}$</tex-math></inline-formula> <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">$ \mathrm{rad/s/\sqrt{Hz}}$</tex-math></inline-formula>. This configuration provides a new solution choice for high-performance IFOGs, which can be applied in a wider range of fields.
