MANAGING COGNITI0N WORKERS IN THE ERA OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: DRAWING FROM THE THEORY ON KNOWLEDGE WORKERS
This paper scans management research and practice literature to find out how managers can create a work environment where leaders should not have much to contribute because, in this era of artificial intelligence (AI) that is expected to last until the middle of this century, this is the management style that would bring success. The environment that is needed in contemporary organizations that thrive on creativity and innovation-using AI as a tool-is to facilitate leadership in employees. This is essential for the success of organizations that employ cognition workers, who not just bring knowledge and expertise to work but also mind, and control themselves because AI will make these jobs so lonely. This paper commences with the deducing of the research questions drawn from the literature broadly covering this topic, then reviews the information that covers them, refines the theme, and arrives at propositions that are used for developing the hypotheses to be tested using electronic database metanalysis.A discussion of the background information provides the readers with the current a nd historical context of management and leadership in all, but particularly, the organizations employing the cognition workers essential for AI.
