Current advances in the therapeutic potential of scutellarin: Novel applications, mechanisms, and future challenges
Scutellarin, a flavonoid glycoside predominantly found in Scutellaria baicalensis , has gained attention as a compound of notable importance due to its diverse pharmacological properties and potential therapeutic applications. This review seeks to offer an in-depth summary of the present advances in scutellarin research, accentuting its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, neuroprotective, cardiovascular, and anticancer effects. Scientific articles used for this review were retrieved from ScienceDirect® ( https://www.sciencedirect.com/search ), Google Scholar ( https://scholar.google.com/ ), National Agricultural Library (AGRICOLA), (agricola.nal.usda.gov/help/quicksearch.html), PubMed® ( https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih . gov/), and SciELO ( https://search.scielo.org/ ) databases. Recent studies reveal novel mechanisms of action and innovative formulation strategies that enhance its bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy, including nanoformulations and combination therapies. Although, obstacles like bioavailability issues, the importance of establishing consistent standards and maintaining quality, and limitations in current clinical trials persist. This review identifies unexplored areas, such as scutellarin's interaction with gut microbiota and its role in personalized medicine, and denotes the importance of an interdisciplinary approach in future research. Moreover, it emphasizes the necessity for regulatory frameworks to facilitate the clinical application of scutellarin. By resolving existing gaps and proposing future research directions, this review seeks to promote a more thorough the comprehension of scutellarin's therapeutic potential and its implications for clinical practice and public health.
