The Effects of Selenium Supplementation on Lipid Profile and the Inflammatory and Oxidative Stress Markers in Patients With Kidney Diseases

This meta-analysis analyzed randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to determine the impact of selenium supplementation on lipid profiles, inflammatory markers, and oxidative stress in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Data were combined using a fixed- or random-effects model. Results of 7 included RCTs showed a significant increase in high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) levels following selenium intake. However, circulating levels of triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL-c, and malondialdehyde (MDA) were not significantly affected. Selenium intake also reduced high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) levels compared to controls, suggesting that selenium supplementation might lower and elevate hs-CRP and HDL-c levels, respectively, indicating its potential therapeutic effect.
