Load Variation Impact on Generalized Droop Controlled Grid-Forming Inverters in Islanded Microgrids: Experimental Insights
This work examines the capability of a generalized droop-controlled grid-forming inverter to withstand rapid load variations without compromising the stability of an islanded microgrid. The voltage and frequency stability of the islanded microgrid under significant load changes are analyzed, and the inverter's response to rapid demand fluctuations is evaluated. The research also investigates the essential control systems to be implemented to manage the dynamic nature of the microgrid and the implementation of load response strategies for real-time demand adjustment. This work aims to contribute to the integration of renewable energy in future planned systems by assessing the resilience and reliability of microgrids under dynamic conditions and ensuring compliance with the existing grid codes. Modifications to the internal loops to elevate the level of decoupling between them and achieve resilient frequency stability are examined and analyzed. Further responses are represented as well, to evaluate the controller performance in the islanded mode precisely.
