An Energy Efficient and High-Speed Data Telemetry Receiver Suitable for Simultaneous Inductive Power and Data Telemetry

This paper presents a high-speed, power-efficient data telemetry receiver, suitable for implantable biomedical devices. The embedded proposed envelope detector enables the system to extract high-rate data from its carrier signal up to half the carrier frequency with low power consumption. The proposed data receiver system was designed and implemented using TSMC 65nm LP CMOS technology, which occupies an area of <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$0.007\text{mm}^{2}$</tex>. Post-layout simulation results show that the system achieves a data rate of 6.78Mbit/Sec over an AM-modulated 13.56MHz carrier signal while consuming 74µW at a 2.5V supply voltage, resulting in a system efficiency of 10.9pJ/bit. In addition, the proposed system was verified by extracting COOK and 8-level LSK modulated back telemetry data at rates of 3.39 and 2 Mbit/Sec, respectively.
