Dual Phase Asynchronous DC-DC Controller for Automotive High Power Applications

This paper introduces a novel control system for enhancing dynamic adaptive automotive lighting via a multiphase DC-DC boost controller. As automotive front lighting evolves to incorporate a variety of functions, such as daytime running lights and adaptive LED Matrix configurations, the demand for specialized LED drivers that meet rigorous automotive standards increases. The prevalent lighting system for premium cars is based on dual-stage DC-DC converter design, featuring a boost followed by a buck stage. This solution provides flexibility but struggles with rising power demands, which can reach 70W for each side of a vehicle. To address the challenge of managing higher currents and improving efficiency, we propose transitioning the standard boost converter to a multiphase system. Our method refines existing multiphase control techniques, which already offer diverse output voltage and current regulation, by minimizing the number of external components required, thus reducing system complexity. The implementation of our method is demonstrated through a prototype. With this innovation, we contribute to the solid-state circuit domain, offering a solution that aligns with the automotive's goal of developing high-efficiency, cost-effective lighting systems for modern vehicles.
