Sensorless Control With Optimized PI Controller Parameters for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor with Model Reference Adaptive System
This paper presents a sensorless control strategy for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSMs) in order to reduce the cost and enhance the reliability of the drive system. The Model Reference Adaptive System (MRAS) is utilized to estimate the rotor speed and position without the need for incremental encoders or speed transducers. Furthermore, a genetic algorithm is employed to find the optimal parameters for the Proportional-Integral (PI) controllers. Accordingly, the performance of the field-field oriented (FOC) control is significantly improved. The proposed method is implemented using Matlab/Simulink blocks. It can be observed from the simulation results that the proposed observer succeeded in estimating the rotor speed and position with high accuracy during several operation conditions. Furthermore, the total harmonic distortion (THD) analysis of the current depicts that the sensorless system has a slightly lower value (2.03%) than sensored system (2.34%). This is beneficial for the overall efficiency and performance of the motor drive system.
