Robustness Analysis of Transmission Errors in Multi-View HEVC: Propagation Dynamics and Mitigation Strategies

Multi-view High Efficiency Video Coding (MV-HEVC) faces critical challenges in maintaining robustness against transmission errors, such as packet loss and bit errors, which degrade video quality through error propagation across spatial, temporal, and inter-view correlations. This paper provides an in-depth robustness analysis of MV-HEVC under error-prone conditions, focusing on the propagation dynamics of errors within Network Abstraction Layer (NAL) units, specifically the Video Coding Layer (VCL) and Non-Video Coding Layer (Non-VCL). By examining varying Bit Error Rates and Packet Loss Rates, we assess the impact on multi-view video quality and identify the most error-sensitive components. Experimental results reveal that Non-VCL units, essential for maintaining inter-view synchronization, are particularly vulnerable to packet loss, leading to significant degradation in decoded quality. This analysis under-scores the need for enhanced protection mechanisms to preserve video intrgrity in error-prone transmission environments.
