Methodologies for Designing Usable Privacy Controls in Mobile Applications: A Systematic Literature Review
As the use of mobile applications continues to grow, designing usable privacy controls for mobile applications is of paramount importance. This systematic literature review (SLR) aims to explore the methodologies employed in studying usable privacy controls in mobile applications. A total of eleven research papers were selected from an initial pool of one hundred papers based on predefined inclusion criteria. The selected papers encompassed a range of methodologies, including between-subject user studies, surveys, interviews, observations, heuristic evaluations, design science research, literature reviews, and interpretative research approaches. The findings shed light on the diverse approaches used to examine usable privacy controls in mobile applications and highlight emerging trends and gaps in the existing literature. The implications of the findings are discussed, and recommendations are provided for future research directions and improvements in methodology. This SLR contributes to the understanding of effective methodologies for studying usable privacy controls in mobile applications.
