Performance of DC-DC Boost Converter Based on Model Predictive Control Technique

This paper explores the application of the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control algorithm to a DC-DC boost converter used in photovoltaic (PV) systems, utilizing the finite state model predictive control (FSMPC) technique. The objective is to analyze the performance of the DC-DC boost converter with the aforementioned advanced control technique. Additionally, this study compares FSMPC with one of the most common and simple control techniques found in the literature: the Perturb and Observe (P&O) control algorithm. The comparison and evaluation are conducted using both simulation software and hardware implementation. For the P&O algorithm, the steady-state operation of the DC-DC boost converter is evaluated with MPPT applied, while for FSMPC, the transient response in tracking the current reference is assessed. MATLAB Simulink software is used for simulations, and a 550W DC-DC conventional boost converter is assembled and controlled using the Texas Instruments C2000 LAUNCHXL-F28379D for the hardware tests. This comprehensive approach enables a robust comparison of the control techniques in terms of both performance and practical applicability in PV systems.
