The Postmodern Learner in a Digital Age: Exploring the Impact of New Media on Higher Education Practices
The article discusses the evolving role of new media in tertiary education, drawing on the theories of key figures such as Marshall McLuhan, Alvin Toffler, and Pierre Levy. It explores how these thinkers envisioned the future of education, emphasizing the potential of new media to transform learning environments. The concept of the “postmodern rogue” is introduced, representing a learner who is deeply engaged, mobile, and motivated by both freedom and collaboration. The article further examines the application of online media, particularly massive open online courses (MODCs), in fulfilling these educational challenges. However, it also identifies significant gaps in the current use of online media, suggesting that many traditional educational challenges persist even in digital formats. The conclusion calls for further research into how new media can be better utilized to enhance learning outcomes in institutions of tertiary education.
