A Novel Protection Approach of Wide Area with a Wind Farm Based on VI Correlation: Results of Simulation and Laboratory

This work exposes a new centralized digital strategy for large-scale network protection. Such a strategy uses the correlation factor between the signals of phase voltages plus line currents. System Protection Terminals (SPTs) receive the measured signals from each transmission line's sides. Then it can directly communicate with the other SPTs, SPC (system protection center), and PDC (Phasor Data Concentrator). The PDC collects data from all SPTs and correlates the data by time tag and gives it to the SPC to monitor, control, and protect the power grid, the response time is 0.01 seconds after the fault occurred. The studied system was a part of the 220 kV network of the Egyptian network which is connected to the ZAAFARANA wind farm; the simulation is done by using MATLAB/ SIMULINK software. In addition, this article exposes a real-time study that depends on experimental laboratory work. The laboratory system uses a transmission line model of 500kV, 300km. Both current and voltage signals fed the data acquisition card at 1.4 kHz sampling frequency through current and voltage transducers. The used software in the laboratory work is the Lab-View package. The results of both simulation and laboratory tests prove that the suggested strategy is reliable, stable, and quick. The laboratory results assure the simulated results.
