Changing the Paradigm: The Role of Modelling in Educational Content Engineering

In various scientific fields, formalism plays a crucial role in articulating intentions prior to implementation, often incurring significant costs. Software tools enhance these processes by allowing risk assessment and validation, minimizing potential errors. Modeling extends into management and software engineering, where detailed business and executable models optimize efficiency and ensure robustness. However, there is a notable absence of specialized tools for curriculum design, hindering the efficiency of educational program development and highlighting the need for tailored modeling resources. This paper proposes an executable qualification model that integrates open content subject models within a curriculum framework, enabling collaborative refinement among stakeholders. By employing modeling methodologies, educators can improve the coherence and adaptability of educational programs, enriching student learning experiences. Subsequent sections critique traditional conceptual modeling, advocating for active techniques that account for dynamic knowledge and complexities of digitalization. The paper draws parallels between software engineering practices and educational content creation, emphasizing requirement elicitation and adaptability. The Virtualized Community Platform (VCP) is introduced, offering tools like the Computer-Aided Content Environment (CACE) to facilitate the creation and modification of educational content. This promotes teacher collaboration and enhances student monitoring. Empirical evidence from the VCP model shows a dramatic increase in student engagement compared to traditional methods, reflecting a shift toward more student-centered learning. Ultimately, integrating active conceptual modeling and software engineering principles into curriculum design presents a transformative opportunity to enhance educational practices and outcomes.
