Numerical validation of space-dependent zero-power reactor noise counting techniques
To ensure the safe operation of a reactor, precise knowledge of kinetic parameters is essential. One method for determining these parameters such as the neutron decay constant α is through the study of zero-power reactor noise. Theoretical zero-power noise models incorporating spatial variations of kinetic parameter estimators have been developed in the past. However, these models have not been extensively compared to scientific computing tools. This paper aims, first and foremost, to provide a comprehensive review of the methods and theoretical models. Subsequently, Monte Carlo simulation is used to numerically validate the counting techniques by comparing their estimations with theoretically calculated values. This process is applied to time correlation estimators such as Rossi- α , statistical moments estimators like Feynman- α , and spectral estimators such as Cohn- α . The paper ultimately presents compelling findings regarding the behavior and characteristics of estimators in a pointwise geometry and offers initial insights into spatial phenomena. Notably, it highlights that the spatial Diven factor is often overlooked in modeling zero-power noise. • A theoretical review of zero power neutron noise. • A detailed description of the numerical methods used for validating neutron noise counting techniques. • A new efficient Monte Carlo toy model for generating time series of zero power neutron noise especially developed for this purpose. • Simulation results demonstrating the accuracy of these methods.
