Mucoadhesive Drug Delivery System
Mucoadhesive drug delivery systems engage with the mucus layer on the mucosal epithelial surface, interacting with mucin molecules and prolonging the duration of the dosage form at the absorption site. Mucoadhesive drug delivery systems are components of controlled drug delivery systems as well as novel drug delivery systems. Administering drugs through the absorptive mucosa in various readily accessible body cavities such as ocularnasal, buccal, rectal, and vaginal mucosa presents notable benefits compared to peroral administration for systemic effects. Mucoadhesive drug delivery systems extend the duration the dosage form remains at the application or absorption site. They promote close interaction between the dosage form and the underlying absorption surface, thereby enhancing the drug's therapeutic effectiveness.
