Analyzing House Music: Relations of Audio Features and Musical Structure

House music is composed differently from popular music; each part repeats the same pattern multiple times, and the structure is formed by inserting and/or deleting patterns. However, it is unclear what specific factors determine the structure of house music. Our previous study attempted to analyze the musical structure of some pieces of house music, but the number of pieces used in the experiment was insufficient. In this paper, we analyze 194 pieces of house music from different perspectives: frequency, sound pressure, and drum patterns. First, each piece is segmented and a label is assigned to each segment. Then, the Spectral Centroid, sound pressure, onsets for each drum, and other features are calculated for each section (intro, drop, break, and outro). The relationship between these features and sections is then investigated. Results show that sound pressure and other featurs of unseparated sources vary between sections, while the Spectral Centroid and similar features do not show significant differences.
