Vitamin D Status Profile In Patients With End-Stage Renal Disease With Mineral Bone Disorder That Undergoing Regular Hemodialysis
Introduction Vitamin D deficiency and metabolic bone disorders (MBD) are frequent complications in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) who undergo regular hemodialysis. The course of CKD-MBD involves complex interaction of various minerals and factors that is still little to known. This study aims to describe the status of vitamin D in ESRD patients with MBD who undergo regular hemodialysis at the dialysis installation of Dr. Soetomo Hospital Surabaya. Methods This study is an observational descriptive study with a cross-sectional approach. The population of this study is ESRD patients with MBD that over the age of 18 years and are undergoing regular hemodialysis 2 times per week at the Dialysis Installation of Dr. Soetomo Hospital Surabaya.Demographic data and vitamin D status were determined using serum levels of 25(OH)D taken from peripheral blood.Vitamin D deficiency occurs when serum levels of 25(OH)D are below 20 ng/mL.Insufficiency if serum levels of 25(OH)D are between 21-29 ng/mL.Results This study involved 72 subjects.More than men, women were obtained as many as 42 patients (58.3%).The median age of the study subjects was 51 years (IQR:42-55).Most subjects came from the Javanese tribe as many as 60 patients (83.3%).The subject's final level of education varies, with the majority of high school graduates 37.5%.The average vitamin D level in the study subjects was 19.1 ng/ml (IQR: 14.6-28.6)ng/ml.Discussion The subjects were more characterized by the female gender, age over 50, regular HD duration of more than 5 years, and comorbidities of hypertension, aligning with DOPPS phase 5 study highlights gender distribution variations across countries depending on the region. In Indonesia, the majority of HD patients are in the age group of 50-60 years, consistent with national reports.Ethnically, Javanese dominate among HD patients in Surabaya, reflecting local demographics. Conclusion :Vitamin D insufficiency and deficiency were found in the majority of CKD-MBD patients. The predominant characteristics of this population included female gender, age above 50 years, Javanese ethnicity, education level of senior high school, hypertension comorbid, and more than 5 years of hemodialysis.
