Evaluation Of Curettage & Synthetic Bone Graft In Management Of Aneurysmal Bone Cyst In Children & Adults Of The Short-Term Period
Background: Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) mostly weaken bone properties and in some situation leads to to pathological fractures, needing curettage and the bone defects filled with grafts to prevent complications. Objective: Evaluate the efficacy and safety of curettage & an artificial bone substitute in the management of aneurysmal bone cyst. Methods: This study prospectively assessed 22 patients of ABC with mean age (12.3±4.7) years complaining from aneurysmal bone cyst tumor who had undergone curettage and filling of the bone defects with artificial bone grafts. This study done in Baghdad hospitals between January 2020 and November 2024. Various patients with aneurysmal bone cyst were included in this study and randomly assigned to receive the artificial bone substitute, the patients were followed up for a period of 12 months and radiologic healing status and restoring full function status were evaluated. Results: Bone healing regarding gender and age not significantly linked with both radiologic healing status or time to stable healing. The results showed that the artificial bone substitute was effective in terms of bone healing and restoring of function. However, the artificial bone substitute had some advantages, including shorter surgical time, less blood loss, and fewer complications. In addition, the artificial bone substitute was found to be safe and effective in bone healing and restoring function. There were no serious adverse events reported during the study period. Conclusion: The artificial bone substitute is a safe and effective in the management of ABC. Further studies are varified to confirm these findings and to evaluate the long-term outcomes of this treatment.
