A população negra e o acesso à educação nas prisões brasileiras
Over the years, security policies in Brazil have been incarcerating more Black people, making prisons a place for an increasingly homogeneous population profile. In addition to the conditions that lead Black and Brown people to be imprisoned more than other ethnic groups, this study aims to identify Black people’s access to the right to education in prison. Education faces many challenges in this space: the insufficient number of offered places, the political decisions of governments, prison management, and even society itself, which understands education in prisons as a privilege (even though this right is independent of subjects’ condition of deprivation of liberty). By the answers given to the questionnaire that was applied to teachers who work with prisoners, this study shows the factors that condition the selection, enrollment, and occupation of the places offered in the schools in the prison units of Franco da Rocha – SP.
