1 PETER: A CRITICAL AND EXEGETICAL COMMENTARY. 2 VOLUMES. By Travis B.Williams and David G.Horrell. International Critical Commentary. London: T&T Clark, 2023. Pp. xxxviii + 816. Hardback, $110.00 (per volume).
theological ideas, and the influence of the letter. The commentary proper aims for comprehensiveness, as the authors have sought to provide a remark about each word or phrase in the text.Several features stand out.As with their other published works on 1 Peter, Williams and Horrell draw from a variety of critical methods, such as social psychology and postcolonial theory. These approaches are employed to help make sense of the text, its historical context, and potential meaning for today.Textual variants are not merely listed, but their potential meaning is discussed. They also explore how section markers in the ancient manuscripts can help structure the argument of the letter. The bibliography is 160 pages long, and the footnotes and interaction with other scholars are extensive. The authors engage with recent scholarship as well as that from previous generations. They also take seriously the opinions offered by ancient and medieval interpreters.Williams and Horrell carefully lay out the various options on introductory or exegetical issues and support their positions (which is not always the case in commentaries).Overall, this commentary is a remarkable achievement and will serve the next generation of Petrine scholarship well.It indicates that 1 Peter is no longer the "step-child" (as has been previously lamented) of New Testament studies.
