THE BLOOMSBURY RESEARCH HANDBOOK OF EARLY CHINESE ETHICS AND POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY . Edited by AlexusMcLeod. Bloomsbury Research Handbooks in Asian Philosophy. London and New York: Bloomsbury, 2019. Pp. vi + 305. Hardback, $190.00; Paperback, $57.95.
McLeod is a professor of religious studies at Indiana University. This handbook employs historical and comparative approaches to focus on the early Chinese ethical and political ideas from various schools and thinkers. The handbook consists of three main parts: McLeod's Introduction, Part One Historical Approaches, and Part Two Comparative Approaches. In the introduction, McLeod briefly presents the basic viewpoints and backgrounds of the ancient Chinese thinkers and schools discussed in this volume; at the same time, he also introduces the content of this volume. Part One, consisting of seven articles, mainly uses the historical method, examining ethics and politics in the historical and cultural context of the early Chinese thinkers, including Confucianism and Daoism. Part Two consists of five articles. This part uses the comparative method to explore the topic in early Chinese literature, notably including comparisons between Chinese and non-Chinese approaches. In summary, this handbook juxtaposes Chinese with Western and Indian thought, thereby covering pre-Qín and Hàn schools such as Confucianism, Daoism, and Mohism. The contributors apply ancient theories to modern issues in metaethics, human rights, and the links between ethics and metaphysics. The volume is a superb introduction to early Chinese ethics and political philosophy and will be of great value to students and scholars.
